We’ve decided to take the entire weekend off and just spend some time enjoying the Holiday with the kids. We started out today taking the girls to see Rio. I’ll watch Anne Hathaway in anything, even if she is just an animated blue bird. What can I say?
The rains hadn’t quite started back up again when we got home so the girls took an opportunity to play outside a bit, and I took the opportunity to get some panning shots in. Here’s the big one flying past on her scooter.
I usually use the face as the point of focus and make sure it is static and sharp in a panning image. I was having a devil of a time with it on these. I finally figured out that in addition to the forward motion, the girls’ heads were moving up and down when they kick off. I almost switched them to their bikes at that point, but came up with the idea of using their foot as the point of focus instead. I like the affect, with the one foot perfectly still, and the other an arc of motion.
Fabulous photo and thanks for the tip about focusing on the foot. I would not have thought of that! Glad you got to enjoy some downtime with scooter fun.
Thanks Tech Mom, and thanks for stopping by!
Lovely shot Jim. Wonderful motion captured in this shot.
Will have to try it out sometime.
Good job!
Thanks Sasi! I haven’t made any panning shots in a few months, nearly forgotten how much I like them!
Good that you have the weekend off. We did the same.
The idea is great to focus on the foot. The effect is great. The photo is great.
Today I had the same idea to take a photo with the big one on this scooter. He is now jumping around with it….I will post it later….
Good one…
Thanks Schleefy! I look forward to seeing the shot!
This is a fantastic shot Jim!! Thanks for the tip about focusing on the foot. I haven’t really attempted any motion shots other than the hunter jumper shots a couple weeks ago. I’ll have to try it.
Thanks Bonnie! By the way, the foot tip isn’t so much about focusing on the foot. I got a lot of comments about that, so I’m putting together a post to clarify.

Sweet shot indeed! I love the foot focus and motion effect on the rest. Lovely! She looks like she’s going really fast… I bet she was having alot of fun. 🙂
Thanks Missy! She and her sister were trading off taking runs past Daddy, and they were both having a blast 🙂
I love it! I think focusing on the foot is a great idea, as mine eye was drawn directly to her feet and before I read your post, I thought………”I love how the other foot is in motion.”
Thanks Amber, and thanks for stopping by!
I have yet to try this kind of shot. You have a great capture here! You’ve inspired me to try this one day soon…
Thanks Margaret! You should definitely try some panning shots, they’re a lot of fun! If you would like a few tips I put another post on my blog after this one giving a few pointers on Panning Shots.
By the way, what were your settings here?
I shot this at 1/20th of a second, which resulted in an aperature of f/20. I usually range between 1/15th and 1/30th for panning shots, depending on the speed of the subject and how smooth I’m feeling that day 🙂
This is great! Love the focus on the foot.
Thanks Kristen, and thanks for stopping by!
What a great shot, I love the idea of focusing on the foot! The movement is brilliantly captured, as is the sense of fun the little girl is having when she is scooting.
Thanks Nics! That’s what I love about panning shots, they really do show the fun 🙂
Great capture…love the movement in her feet!
Thanks Julie!
How neat!!
Thanks Susan!
Wow! Cool. Love this action shot!
Thanks Kim, and thanks for stopping by!
I’m still trying to master this technique. Great shot.
Thanks Alicia! Keep working at it, panning is a great technique, it just takes a lot of effort. It’s one of my favorite types of action shots, and I still toss more images than I keep.
