We’ve decided to take the entire weekend off and just spend some time enjoying the Holiday with the kids. We started out today taking the girls to see Rio. I’ll watch Anne Hathaway in anything, even if she is just an animated blue bird. What can I say?
The rains hadn’t quite started back up again when we got home so the girls took an opportunity to play outside a bit, and I took the opportunity to get some panning shots in. Here’s the big one flying past on her scooter.

I usually use the face as the point of focus and make sure it is static and sharp in a panning image. I was having a devil of a time with it on these. I finally figured out that in addition to the forward motion, the girls’ heads were moving up and down when they kick off. I almost switched them to their bikes at that point, but came up with the idea of using their foot as the point of focus instead. I like the affect, with the one foot perfectly still, and the other an arc of motion.

Today I had the same idea to take a photo with the big one on this scooter. He is now jumping around with it….I will post it later….

This is a fantastic shot Jim!! Thanks for the tip about focusing on the foot. I haven’t really attempted any motion shots other than the hunter jumper shots a couple weeks ago. I’ll have to try it.

I shot this at 1/20th of a second, which resulted in an aperature of f/20. I usually range between 1/15th and 1/30th for panning shots, depending on the speed of the subject and how smooth I’m feeling that day 🙂

Thanks Alicia! Keep working at it, panning is a great technique, it just takes a lot of effort. It’s one of my favorite types of action shots, and I still toss more images than I keep.
