Day 113 – 02/26/11 – Tournament

I had no problem deciding what to shoot today, as it’s tournament day.  Today was the 2011 Lake Erie Championship, and the big one was competing in Olympic style sparring.  I believe I was looking forward to today even more than she was.  I’d decided not to compete this time around, so this was the first tournament that I was able to concentrate on photographing.

Here’s the big one preparing for battle.

Here, in the official image of the day, she’s preparing to launch a right roundhouse kick as her coach looks on.

Another right roundhouse in motion, unfortunately her opponent slid back out of range and is about to land a fast kick to the big one’s side.  A score for red.

She did score a point or two of her own though.  Here she is about to hit with a roundhouse.

Given the size difference between the opponents, I suppose calling her the “big one” isn’t exactly accurate!

The size difference between the combatants was noticeable.

While her opponent did outrank and outweigh her, it was also abundantly clear that she had more experience and had just plain trained harder.  She won this match squarely, and went on to a well deserved first place medal in the division as well.

The big one was understandably disappointed that she was knocked out in her first match.  However she did have fun, gained some experience, and figured out some things she needs to work on in practice.  All in all a good day, and we’re looking forward to the next tournament!

Great photos! And congrats on the win!

Oops, I misread that about the win. Sorry 😦

  3. Love this! My favorite is the fourth image! Awesome DOF especially for an action shot. It’s funny to see little girls kicking each other, but seriously, good for her! She should be proud and grateful to have such a proud dad! 🙂

She is brave for doing this in general but win or lose it will definitely build character and teach her a lot. Great shots Jim!

Thanks Mindy! This was actually her fourth tournament, she’s definitely getting used to stepping into the ring. It absolutely builds character and even more importantly confidence, which is why we started. The little one will hopefully be competing in a few months as well.

  5. These are awesome action shots Jim, I like em all! Sorry to hear about the loss but, like you said, it’s a great learning experience! I love the fourth one down, shows the size difference and to me, shows that the (your) big one had no fear, I tip my hat to her! 🙂

Thanks! I like that shot photographically as well. I also cringe every time I look at it though. With both her hands flung out behind or to the side like that she’s leaving herself wide open. Done that myself a few times and ended up getting a knock on the noggin 😉
