I had no problem deciding what to shoot today, as it’s tournament day. Today was the 2011 Lake Erie Championship, and the big one was competing in Olympic style sparring. I believe I was looking forward to today even more than she was. I’d decided not to compete this time around, so this was the first tournament that I was able to concentrate on photographing.
Here’s the big one preparing for battle.
Here, in the official image of the day, she’s preparing to launch a right roundhouse kick as her coach looks on.
Another right roundhouse in motion, unfortunately her opponent slid back out of range and is about to land a fast kick to the big one’s side. A score for red.
She did score a point or two of her own though. Here she is about to hit with a roundhouse.
Given the size difference between the opponents, I suppose calling her the “big one” isn’t exactly accurate!
While her opponent did outrank and outweigh her, it was also abundantly clear that she had more experience and had just plain trained harder. She won this match squarely, and went on to a well deserved first place medal in the division as well.
The big one was understandably disappointed that she was knocked out in her first match. However she did have fun, gained some experience, and figured out some things she needs to work on in practice. All in all a good day, and we’re looking forward to the next tournament!
