Yesterday’s shot got me thinking about the effect of different lighting schemes, and since I don’t have a new theme yet I thought I’d play around a bit more. Specifically I wanted to play with lighting in order to create different effects in the same basic image.
My home office has an entire wall of bookshelves. They are filled to overflowing with some of the books I’ve collected over the years. Despite the number of books, they are at times hard to see behind the veritable wall of knick knacks. Whether this guy is a knick or a knack I don’t know, but he’s definitely the subject of today’s image.
I started off by lighting him evenly and cleanly. He ended up thoroughly lit, and just as thoroughly boring.
Then I switched the lighting around, trying a variety of different angles, powers and combinations. I was able to achieve a number of different feels to the image. Here’s my favorite, which to my eye has substantially more impact than the previous shot.
Aside from a little contrast boost and some sharpening, both of these images are out of camera. The difference between the two was achieved not in post processing, but strictly through the lighting.
