Day 81 – 01/25/11 – Deep Sea Discovery

Yesterday’s shot got me thinking about the effect of different lighting schemes, and since I don’t have a new theme yet I thought I’d play around a bit more.  Specifically I wanted to play with lighting in order to create different effects in the same basic image.

My home office has an entire wall of bookshelves.  They are filled to overflowing with some of the books I’ve collected over the years.  Despite the number of books, they are at times hard to see behind the veritable wall of knick knacks.  Whether this guy is a knick or a knack I don’t know, but he’s definitely the subject of today’s image.

I started off by lighting him evenly and cleanly.  He ended up thoroughly lit, and just as thoroughly boring.

A deep sea diver lit evenly. Boring.

Then I switched the lighting around, trying a variety of different angles, powers and combinations.  I was able to achieve a number of different feels to the image.  Here’s my favorite, which to my eye has substantially more impact than the previous shot.

A deep sea diver explores the depths. Lit for effect.

Aside from a little contrast boost and some sharpening, both of these images are out of camera.  The difference between the two was achieved not in post processing, but strictly through the lighting.

  1. Very nice, I think the second shot represents Big Daddy a little better! 😀 It’s amazing how much of a change can be achieved just by different lighting techniques, angles, power of the Speedlight, through an umbrella…so much fun! Great job showing the same image with different lighting!

Great link, thanks Becky! Similar in concept to a workshop I went to a few months ago, though they used a small bust sculpture in place of the egg. I may have to try this, as while I don’t have any busts around, I certainly have an egg or two!

I love this post, it really shows you what lighting can do for an image. The second image is so striking! Thanks for taking us on this journey with you!
