Day 70 – 01/14/11 – White

If black is the absence of color, white is the sum of all colors.  That was a difficult thing to explain to the girls, right up until I pulled out the prism and showed them the rainbow.  Science – it’s fun and pretty.

On top of being a fun scientific fact, white being the sum of all colors makes it an appropriate subject with which to finish up my Colors theme.  I’ve had a lot of fun with this theme, but it’s time for a change.  And that’s not just because I’m out of different color backgrounds either!

Today’s image – like yesterday’s Oreos – needs no explanation for those of us with a sweet tooth.  It’s particularly appropriate as we are in the midst of getting hit with another snow storm.

This shot was a fun one to light.  I tried something completely different, and rather than using multiple shop lights I used a single flash.  I fired it through a diffuser and bounced it off of first one, then a second, then a third foam board.  I like the effect, eliminating any harsh shadows from the mug and marshmallow bag, while leaving nice soft multi-directional shadows to define the marshmallows.

  1. Looks like you’re having fun with “colors”.
Love the way you have put this together and use of diffuser to eliminate the shadows.

  2. I love your lighting, and have all of your color themed photographs.

  3. Jim, lighting…I love working with lighting, so so much fun! Looks like someone (ahem) may have taken a drink or two off the hot chocolate eh? 😛 All kidding aside, this photo reminded me of when I was a kid and we would come off the outdoor skating rink in the freezing Canadian winters and warm up with hot chocolate and…marshmallows! Great job with the set up. 😀
